The Holguin Cubs notched their 44th victory in the 64th Cuban National Baseball Series on Tuesday. Defeating the Ciego de Avila Tigers 3-2 at José Ramón Cepero Stadium.
With this win, the Cubs maintained their slim mathematical chances of reaching the top two spots in the standings. While the Tigers lost all hope of qualifying for the postseason.
The Holguin team scored a run early in the game when, with two outs. Jorlis Bravo singled and Lázaro Cedeño drove him in with a double. Bringing his total to 72nd run of the season and solidifying his position as the league’s RBI leader.
The Cubs scored twice in the third inning when Richard Oliva (4-2, 2B) and Cristian Onofre hit consecutive singles. They advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Raúl Domínguez. Then Oliva scored on a groundout to first by Bravo (4-1, 1 RBI), and Onofre advanced to third before scoring on a wild pitch.
Also the Tigers capped off the scoring in the game by netting their second run in the bottom of the third inning. Taking advantage of a walk, a stolen second base, and an RBI single by their cleanup hitter, Jonathan Bridón.
After these results, the standings are as follows in the top section: Las Tunas (47-24). Matanzas (45-27, 2.5 points behind). Holguin (44-28, 3.5 points behind). Mayabeque (42-30, 5.5 points behind). Industriales (41-30, 6.0 points behind). Sancti Spiritus (41-31, 6.5 points behind). Artemisa (41-32, 7.0 points behind) and Cienfuegos (37-34, 10.0 points behind).
Still in contention for a playoff spot are: Pinar del Rio (36-34, 10.5 games back). Santiago de Cuba (34-37, 13.0 games back) and Villa Clara (29-33, 13.5 games back).
