University of the Arts Concert Closes Out the Year in Holguin

The Holguin branch of the University of the Arts closed out the year with a concert featuring pieces from the universal classical repertoire. Performed by students who won awards at the first María Dolores Rodríguez In Memoriam Competition and the Náyade Proenza Grand Prize.

Accompanied by the Holguin Symphony Orchestra (OSH), the young performers Milena Morales Elías. Mariana Rubet Céspedes, Leticia González Joa, and Yosbel Martínez Tassé. Along with sopranos and professors Senia López Camejo and Dianelis Torres Díaz as special guests. Showcased on stage the strength of the teaching work at this institution of higher learning in support of the development of the arts in Cuba.

Maestro Oreste Saavedra, principal conductor of the OSH, expressed his gratitude for the existence of such opportunities. Which foster an environment of mutual growth between the orchestra and the academy. He affirmed that this would be the first of many joint concerts with the University of the Arts.

Moreover this initiative aims to establish itself as a viable means for the comprehensive training of future artists. By incorporating them into professional settings with pieces of high artistic rigor, the OSH director explained.

Also the program included works such as “Che fiero momento” from the opera Orfeo ed Euridice. The Latin American song “El clavel del aire blanco”. “Kuda, kuda, vi udalilis” from the opera Eugene Onegin. And “Salida de Cecilia” from the zarzuela Cecilia Valdés, among other pieces.

The first edition of the María Dolores Rodríguez In Memoriam Competition and Náyade Proenza Grand Prize was held in 2024 and recognized the achievements of students and teachers in their work training future opera singers in Cuba.
