From December 8th to 12th, the Provincial Council of Scientific Societies of Health (CPSCS) in Holguin will host an academic visit from prestigious scientists from the United Kingdom. The purpose of the visit is to share research and projects from this región. Highlighting its potential for international collaboration in the fields of neurology, neurogenetics, dementia, and bioinformatics.
Among the academics in the delegation are Professors Sir John Hardy, Head of the Chair of Molecular Biology of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the UK Dementia Institute. Henry Houlden, Head of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics at the Institute of Neurology, University College London. And Luis Enrique Almaguer Mederos, PhD, a native of Holguin and Associate Researcher at the Laboratory of Neurogenetics at the Institute of Neurology, University College London.
Also participating will be Dr. Sigurlaug Sveinbjörnsdóttir, a Neurology Specialist. With extensive experience in movement disorders, and Bioinformatics Specialist Anupriya Dalmia.
According to the President of the CPSCS, Dr. Elianis Ocaña Samada, this is the first time a visit of this caliber has been received. The group will offer specialized lectures, conduct workshops, examine patients, and visit institutions. Such as the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH). The only science and technological innovation entity in Holguin. And the Lucía Iñiguez Landin Clinical Surgical Hospital. Therefore, the agenda will be extensive, filled with scientific and academic activities.
Globally, Alzheimer’s disease is currently the most common form of senile dementia. The first gene identified in association with this disease was APP. Which encodes the beta-amyloid peptide. The discovery of the first mutation in the APP gene. Also which causes Alzheimer’s disease, was made by one of these scientists, John Hardy.
Therefore, it will be an honor for the scientific community to welcome this eminent scientist and his accompanying delegation to the Cuban city of parks.
