The Las Maravillas farm, in the Holguin municipality of Calixto García, is applying science and technological innovation. As part of its programs aimed at improving animal health and ensuring the planting of pastures and forage crops.
Carlos Pozo, the farm’s owner, told the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that various livestock diseases are treated using natural and traditional medicine. Also technological packages are used to protect the soil for sustainable development.
He explained that plants such as aloe vera, jupito (a type of plant), and neem are used to combat uterine infections and ticks. In addition to taking advantage of their anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of wounds and other ailments.
Moreover he indicated that crossbreeding is carried out to obtain hybrid pastures and forage crops with higher protein content. Combined with the use of natural fertilizers and agroecological practices. This property is a benchmark for supplying meat and milk to the industry in eastern Cuba. It maintains a stable calving rate in cattle, and introduces breeds such as Siboney.
As part of the application of science to agriculture, Holguin province has agroecological farms in the municipalities of the Turquino Plan. Where sustainable economic results are achieved in harmony with the environment and the rational use of natural resources.
Thanks to this work, the use of renewable energy and center-pivot irrigation systems, which are more efficient and economical than conventional systems, has expanded.
