Crocodiles defeat Cubs in doubleheader and move within half a game of first place

The Matanzas Crocodiles responded strongly, defeating the Holguin Cubs in a doubleheader this Friday at Calixto García Stadium. Bringing them within half a game of first place in the 64th Cuban National Baseball Series.

In the first game, the Crocodiles triumphed 8-2, racking up 11 hits and no errors for the visitors. While the home team managed 10 hits and one error. The win went to reliever Silvio Iturralde (7-1), Yosney García (6) earned the save. And the loss was charged to left-handed starter Uberlydis Estévez (2-2).

For the victors, Hanyelo Videt stood out at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. While Luis Ángel Sánchez went 4-for-2 with a double. For the losing side, Luis Raúl Domínguez went 2-for-4.

The Crocodiles’ victory in the second game, also a seven-inning contest, was 2-1 in an error-free game with seven hits for the winners and six for the losers. The individual win went to left-hander Yamichel Pérez (3-1), who pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and no walks. Also while the loss was charged to Holguin’s first reliever, José Miguel Rodríguez (4-2), who allowed four hits and two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings.

The standings now look like this: Holguin (30-17); Matanzas (30-18, 0.5 points behind); Industriales (28-17, 1.0 point behind). Las Tunas (26-17, 2.0 point behind); Mayabeque (26-19, 3.0 point behind). Artemisa (25-20, 4.0 RBI); Sancti Spiritus (26-21, 4.0 RBI); and Cienfuegos (24-20, 4.5 RBI).

This Saturday, starting at 1:30 pm, the tenth series resumes, and Carlos Santiesteban (5-2, 3.14 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cubs.
