Cubs will try to get back to winning ways by hosting Elephants

With a 10-5 record, the Holguín Cubs will host the Cienfuegos Elephants (4-9), from this Tuesday until next Sunday, in the fourth round of the 64th National Baseball Series.

After defeating the Granma Alazanes (3-2) and the Guantánamo Indians (5-0) at home, the Holguín Cubs lost on the road to the Villa Clara Leopards (2-3).

If we stick to the collective statistics, it might seem that the Cienfuegos team will be an easy feast for the home team, but their performance on the field does not always correlate perfectly with the statistics, and their most recent experience was against Villa Clara, who presented our team with a solitary victory.

The Cubs are showing encouraging indicators on offense with an average of .295 (5th in the series), 86 runs scored (5th), 78 RBIs (5th-6th), 12 home runs (6th-7th) and 425 Slugging (7th).

For their part, the Elephants are fourteenth in average (248) and Slugging (333) and thirteenth in runs scored (58), RBIs (54) and home runs (6).

Holguín’s pitching exhibits an earned run average (ERA) of 4.00, the same as Camagüey with whom they share sixth and seventh place, and they have a similar position in strikeouts (73) along with Artemisa. By the way, Artemiseños and Holguín have the most saves, with 5.

The Cienfuegos pitchers’ ERA is 6.90 (13th), they have 57 strikeouts (11th-13th) and have saved two games (12th and 13th).

The Cubs are defending for an average of .974 (4th-6th) and of the nine men who have stolen, six have been caught, while the Cienfuegos team has a defensive average of .969 (11th-12th) and has only caught five of the 15 who have tried to reach the nearest pillow stealing.

In addition to Holguín and Cienfuegos, starting this Tuesday, the following will compete at the Calixto García Stadium: Guantánamo-Artemisa; Pinar-Matanzas; Isla de la Juventud-Sancti Spíritus; Mayabeque-Camagüey; Ciego de Ávila-Las Tunas; Industriales-Granma; and Villa Clara-Sancti Spíritus, always in the second-placed territory.

With three subseries completed, the standings show the following leading segment: Santiago (13-2); Matanzas (12-3); Holguín and Las Tunas (10-5); Artemisa (8-4); Industriales (9-5); Sancti Spíritus (9-6); and Camagüey (8-7).
