Cubs sweep Indians in the National Baseball Series

With a 13-2 knockout in seven innings, the Holguin Cubs completed their sweep of the Guantanamo Indians in the second home game of the 64th National Baseball Series held at Calixto García Stadium.

The Holguin Cubs, who hit 13 hits, had an effective start from Wilson Paredes (2-0), who in 5 1/3 innings managed to isolate six hits. Allowed two earned runs, struck out three batters, and walked one.

Highlighting the batting for the winners were Michael Gorgüet (4-3, 2B, HR-2nd-, 2 RBI), Yasiel González (3-1, HR-2nd-, 2 RBI). Ernesto Torres (4-1, 2B, 3 RBI), and Adriel Hechavarría (1-1, 2 RBI).

Also the Guantanamo team hit eight hits, committed no errors, and had Leonelkis Escalante and Alexis Laborde as their best hitters, both 2-for-3 with one RBI, the former adding a double. The loss went to Joel Tejeda (1-2).

The Holguin team’s four opening wins against the Indios were 7-6 with a winning relief pitch by Michel Cabrera (1-0), 5-1 with a winning pitch by Jesús Enrique Pérez (1-1), 3-1 with a successful leadoff by Carlos Santiesteban (2-0), and 7-4 with a solo win by Luis Cáser (1-0).

According to statistician Sergio Emilio Hernández, the Holguin Cubs have not swept the Guantanamo Indians since Series 54.

After defeating Granma in three of five games and this sweep of Guantanamo, the Holguin team sits at 8-2, sharing third through fifth place with Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba. The standings are led by the Matanzas Crocodiles (9-1) and the Artemisa Hunters (5-1).

Moreover the Cubs have a .296 offensive average, a 3.58 ERA, and a .981 defensive average. They will face the Villa Clara Leopards as visitors this Tuesday at the Augusto César Sandino Stadium in Santa Clara.
