Sexual Activity Is the Best Sleep Aid

Research published in the journal Sleep has found that sexual activity could be a more effective alternative than sleeping pills for combating insomnia. According to scientists, sex helps improve sleep quality due to the release of hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins, which provide feelings of relaxation and well-being.

The study included 53 adults, primarily between the ages of 25 and 49, 53 percent of whom were women. When responding to surveys about how sexual activity affected their sleep, 75% reported an improvement in sleep quality after sex, and 64% stated that it was as effective as or more effective than sleeping pills.

The results showed that having sex can activate natural processes in the body that promote deeper sleep. During intimacy, the body releases hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins, known as “happiness hormones,” which contribute to stress reduction and improve sleep quality.

However, the psychological aspects associated with sexual intercourse were not analyzed. Researchers add that people with negative experiences may not reap the same benefits and may even have more difficulty sleeping.

Chronic insomnia affects millions of people worldwide. It is estimated that more than 16 percent of the global population suffers from it.

Maintaining an active and healthy sex life can positively influence other body systems, from the cardiovascular system to the immune system, in addition to strengthening self-esteem and personal relationships. Below are some of the main benefits.

  1. Improves cardiovascular health

Regular sexual activity contributes to better heart and blood circulation function, which can reduce the risk of heart disease.

  1. Reduces Cancer Risk

Maintaining an active sex life reduces the risk of developing certain types of cancer, especially prostate cancer, as frequent ejaculation helps eliminate toxins.

  1. Boosts the Immune System

Sexually active people develop greater resistance to disease. During sex, antigens such as immunoglobulin A are released, which fights the common cold and even the flu.

  1. Relieves Menstrual Pain

Sex can significantly reduce menstrual pain due to the release of endorphins, which act as natural painkillers.

  1. Reduces the Risk of Heart Attack

Having sex at least three times a week could halve the likelihood of suffering a heart attack or stroke.
