Activists and representatives of the LGBTIQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer and other identities not included in the above) led the parade for Diversity this Saturday. In salute to the International Day for the Struggle Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
The concentration covered one of the main streets of Holguin up to the Calixto Garcia Park. Under slogans such as “All rights for all people” and “Love is Law” as a manifestation of commitment to assert the rights already won. And how much remains to be done to demolish social prejudices and move towards inclusion.
I have been very well received, we have seen a great cultural level and an incredible level of information. The result of the work is noticeable, there is quality in the art of transformism. We see people prepared around this topic, said Dr.C. Mariela Castro Espín.
Although Holguin had a high denial rate to the Family Code, we have seen a certain assimilation to these legislative processes. We cannot say that the province is backward, no, it is that there are people with different political and religious fundamentalisms, she said.
Today’s day also included a tour of the Provincial Museum of History La Periquera and the screening of the documentary Quba, by the American filmmaker Kim Anno.
During these days, the program included a keynote lecture by Dr.C. Mariela Castro Espín, on gender issues. Inclusion and respect for the rights of all people, a gala for diversity and community activities.
The International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is celebrated every May 17th to commemorate the elimination of homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses by the World Health Organization. A fact that occurred on a day like today, but in 1990, during the 43rd World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland.
