New Voices of Poetry 2024 award awarded to Holguin writer

The New Voices of Poetry 2024 award, recognition for emerging writers from across the country, was awarded to Lorena Velázquez Fraga from Holguin for the notebook Vaso con fresas.

The contest, held this Tuesday and sponsored by Ediciones La Luz as part of its campaign to promote young Cuban literature, was also framed by a tribute to the poet Lalita Curbelo Barberán.

A jury made up of poets Nelson Simón, Laura Ruiz and Erian Peña unanimously awarded the award for the construction of an honest and coherent text that deals with the assimilation of a tradition and the search for one’s own saying.

The biographical material that runs through this notebook becomes not only personal and family history, but also a recounting of national history through well-constructed verses, explained Liset Prego Díaz, head of the literature section at the Hermanos Saínz Association of the province of Holguin.

Within the space, the audiobook Los Silencios Transparentes was released, authored by Lalita Curbelo, performed by young Cuban writers, including Liset Prego, Velázquez Fraga and José Luis Laguarda, who give voice to the volume.

This material aims to revive, once again, Lalita’s literary work, which is an inexhaustible source that is renewed over time, declared the journalist and writer Vanessa Pernía Arias in the presentation of the project.

The New Voices of Poetry Prize 2024, founded by literary promoter Joaquín Osorio, has stood out for more than 20 years as a defender of young Cuban poetry, recognizing in past editions emerging poets such as Luis Yuseff, who was later awarded the Nicolás Guillén National Poetry Prize.
