The Modesto Fornaris cooperative farm, located in the municipality of Rafael Freyre in the province of Holguin, promotes the genetic improvement of four species of cattle in order to increase their productivity and adaptability to the territorial geography.
Carlos Pérez Berlanga, president of the entity, explained to the Cuban News Agency that this entity, located in the town of Fray Benito, works in the development and rescue of the tradition of cattle raising, taking into account conditions of holding, feeding and handling of genetically superior animals that allow the development of breeding stock to raise the quality of the herds.
Among them, they are dedicated to the breeding of pure breeds such as the white Cuban zebu and the bermejo, in the case of cattle; in equines, the Quarter Mile; and the pelibuey and nubian typologies, of the ovine and caprine varieties, respectively, ideal for being adaptable to tropical conditions, having higher meat and milk indexes and allowing crossbreeding, he pointed out.
At present, there are more than 860 livestock animals, of which a total of 260 cattle, 11 horses, 46 sheep and 55 goats are certified as pure breeds, in addition to a group of animals to be appreciated that are registered in the Genealogical Book of the Republic, he pointed out.
This work has allowed them to comply with the plan to deliver meat for slaughter, which exceeds 12 tons during the year, of which more than three tons come from minor species, they are in the process of finalizing the milk plan with close to 20 thousand liters delivered to the industry and have marketed 38 future stallions for herd improvement, he said.
As part of their integration to the territorial self-sufficiency program, they have included in their work the breeding of native pigs with 10 breeders, although the plan is to reach up to 28, which contributes to the food and nutritional security of the population, he said.
With this objective, they also have 56 hectares dedicated to various crops where they show compliance with production, self-consumption and contracted destination indicators, as well as they have excelled in the cold planting campaign and are making good progress in the spring campaign, he added.
He also commented that, with the aim of using science and technology to improve the efficiency standards of the sector, they will introduce artificial insemination with imported genetic material from bovine specimens, which in turn will contribute to achieve animal diversity.
The municipality of Rafael Freyre, in the province of Holguín, stood out at territorial level for its agricultural work, with important results in compliance with the Food Sovereignty Law, food production and the increase of the livestock mass, indicators to which the UBPC Modesto Fornaris contributed.
