On September 11 and 12 was held in Holguin a Regional Methodological Meeting of directors of polyclinics and hospitals, in which participated more than 320 health leaders from the eastern region of Cuba
According to the Director General of Health in Holguin, Dr. Julio Yamel Verdecia Reyes, “this methodological meeting covered essential elements of the Primary Health Care and hospitals.
He added that it was attended by polyclinic directors, representatives of the Basic Health Teams, 148 polyclinic directors from the five eastern Cuban provinces, as well as medical assistance directors and Heads of Nursing.
The aim today is to improve medical assistance and achieve greater resoluteness at the Primary Health Care level, as well as bringing the system closer to the population, said Dr. Verdecia.
Different workshops, panels and lectures were held with the purpose of “empowering the many managers in the sector”, mostly young people, who have been given learning tools to achieve technical and professional training and true leadership, emphasizing on professional training and true leadership, the official added.

The event, held on September 11 and 12, was attended by Dr. Fernando Trujillo Sanchez, National Director of Hospitals, and Yagen Pomares Pérez, Director of Primary Health Care; in addition to the the highest political authorities of the territory, represented by Joel Queipo Ruiz, First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
The national methodological meetings, which until then only took place in Havana, this year, on the initiative of the Minister of Public Health, Dr. José Ángel Portal Miranda, and due to the results of the visits to the maternal and infant hospitals, it was decided that they would begin to be carried out on a territorial basis.
The territories chosen as headquarters have shown results and recognition for the work developed in the health sector. On this decision, Dr. Verdecia considered that the excellent results of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín in previous years and the solid history of Holguin’s medicine along many years have contributed to holding the encounter.
Other topics discussed during the meeting were the role of the nursing supervisor as a teacher of the Basic Working Group; the strategies of municipalities, cities and communities for health; the completion of human resources in the Family Doctor and Family Nurse Program; strategic planning; the unique One Health model; as well as the cadre policy, the preparation of the reserve and the work with young professionals.
