Doing justice to Marti’s concept that “books console, soothe, prepare, enrich and redeem”, Cuban librarians deserve the warmest congratulations, who celebrate their day every June 7, in recognition of their dedication, body and soul, to the protection and promotion of literature.
In Holguin, the consecrated Liudmila Leyva Aguilera, director of the Alex Urquiola Provincial Library and Viviana Gámez Guilarte, provincial methodologist of School Libraries, are deserving, this year, of the national awards “Martha Terry In Memoriam” and “Olinta Ariosa Morales”, respectively.
Margarita González Menéndez, from the Technical Institute of Holguín, and Minaelia Oliveros Quiala, from the Amistad con los Pueblos Elementary School, also received honors with the “Antonio Bachiller y Morales” Distinction, father of Cuban bibliography.
These national recognitions for the Day of the Cuban Librarian are promoted by the Cuban Association of Librarians and the Cuban Society of Information Sciences.
For its part, the Provincial Library of Holguin will recognize with its “Juan Albanés” Distinction, librarians Yoldis Leydi Mayo Batista, Karenia Alberteris Batista and Arianne Aimara Vázquez Hidalgo.
The celebrations for the Day of the Cuban Librarian are a permanent tribute to the prolific journalist, historian, lawyer and bibliographer, Antonio Bachiller y Morales, considered the “father of Cuban bibliography”, who was born on June 7, 1812.
