Holguin baseball players looking at Cuban team for Caribbean Cup

Three athletes from Holguin province were called up to the Cuban preselection team sight the Caribbean Baseball Cup for women, to be held from July 7 to 11 in Havana.

The called-up athletes are outfielder Eleyennis Estupiñán, and pitchers Aylén García and Yanet Carbonell, who are already traveling to Havana where training will take place, according to journalist Nelson Rodríguez Roque on his Facebook profile.

These three athletes have represented Holguín in several Baseball5 events, and in the case of Estupiñán and García they were teammates in the softball team, although the first one stopped practicing that discipline.

Also traveling with the baseball players is coach Edilberto Vera, who for the second time will participate in the preparation of the national pre-selection of the discipline.

The Caribbean Baseball Cup will be held at Havana’s Latin American Stadium or Santiago Changa Mederos ball park, depending on the number of participating teams.

According to Margarita Mayeta, head of the discipline, the objective of the Cuban team is to revalidate the title won two years ago in the Dominican Republic.

There are three experienced athletes in the team, the rest are young. “But they are not starting from scratch, nor do they have to learn the ABCs. They are girls with whom we have been working for almost two years and have been part of pre-selections in matches against Canada and Puerto Rico,” added the former volleyball player.

The current Cuban women’s baseball team has players from nine provinces of the country, precisely those that work the sport in their EIDE.

In the last world championship of the discipline, held in Miyoshi, Japan in 2023, Cuba came in seventh place, so it dropped in the ranking, from seventh to eighth place.
