University of Holguin leave off International Events for 2026

In a decision reflecting the impact of the current socioeconomic situation in the country. The University of Holguin (UHo) officially announced the suspension of its international events scheduled for this year.

Through a statement issued by the Office of International Relations. Also the academic institution reported that the measure is a response to the “escalation of the economic war imposed by the current U.S. administration.” Which is generating logistical and financial difficulties that prevent these events from being held at the usual high standard.

Moreover the suspension affects prestigious scientific and academic events. Including the Second International Convention on Energy, New Technologies, and Innovation for Development. A key forum for discussion on energy sustainability in eastern Cuba.

Also the schedule for two flagship events of the University of Holguin has also been suspended. The International Congress on Foreign Languages, Communication and Culture (WEFLA) and the International Seminar on Canadian Studies (SECAN).

The suspension of WEFLA is particularly significant. As it has been held uninterrupted since 1998. Established as one of the most important conferences on foreign languages in Cuba. So this congress has served for nearly three decades as a fundamental hub for the exchange of innovative research. Among academics, professionals, and students from around the world.

Despite the interruption of the in-person program, the University of Holguin expressed its deep gratitude to the national and international academic community. As well as to the collaborators who consistently support the organization of these events.

The university statement emphasizes that the University of Holguin remains committed to scientific excellence. And hopes to resume these forums for dialogue in the near future.

Similarly, the director expressed gratitude for “the solidarity of friends around the world who have decided to join us on this journey despite the challenges.” Reaffirming that the bonds of scientific cooperation transcend current economic limitations.
