Holguin judoka, fourth in qualifying ranking for the Caribbean Games

Holguin judoka Marlon Herrera, in the 73-kilogram division, is in fourth place in the qualifying ranking for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). Published today by the Pan American Judo Confederation.

Herrera reached 280 points after the 80 points he earned with the bronze medal at the Regional Cup held last Saturday in Guatemala. And the 200 points he obtained with the gold medal in the same category at the event on March 22nd in Panama.

The division’s ranking for the Dominican Republic event is headed by Panama’s Ronald González (450). Followed by Mexico’s Ulises Méndez (410) and Colombia’s Ferney Ruiz (287). All of whom have competed in all three qualifying events, one more than the Cuban.

In Guatemala, Marlon Herrera opened with a victory in the 16th round by yuko over Juan Hernández (Colombia). So before falling by the same method in the quarterfinals to Eduardo Araujo (Mexico), the latter of whom would later also win a bronze medal.

From that point on, he defeated all his rivals by ippon. In the repechage, he beat Alejandro Mora (Costa Rica) and Héctor Guerra (Guatemala). In the bronze medal match, he defeated Colombia’s Andrés Sandoval.

Although not yet official, Julio Alderete, head coach of the men’s national judo team. Confirmed that Cuba will field a full team at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Which will take place from July 24th to August 8th of this year in Santo Domingo.
