Birán, a Meeting Point with History

For Leidy Martínez Hidalgo, museologist at the Birán Historical Site. Preserving the memory of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, treasured in wooden walls, old photographs, and household items. It is the most beautiful way to protect an essential part of the island’s history.

The specialist explained to the Cuban News Agency that in Birán, one can understand part of the root of Fidel Castro’s thinking. From the small rural school where he shared time with the town’s children. To the balcony of his room from which he greeted those passing by on the Camino Real (Royal Road). And the corner where the accidental gunshot wound from his brother Ramón’s rifle remains.

Also the site, located in the Holguin municipality of Cueto. It preserves the family home, the school, the post office, the cockfighting arena, and a small hotel. Reflecting the social fabric with which Ángel Castro, Fidel’s father, built the town. Integrating the huts of Haitians and farmers into its structure.

Martínez Hidalgo recounted that Fidel and Raúl came from a well-to-do family. Also that the Comandante was destined to practice law. With a house ready to receive him after graduation, but he decided to remain in Havana and continue the fight for freedom.

He added that both brothers were committed to the revolutionary cause and, when the time came, they renounced their family properties. He recalled that the construction of a dam on the land of the Birán Historical Site almost came to fruition. Until Celia Sánchez intervened in the 1970s and 1980s to reconstruct the original house, respecting every detail.

Today, the Birán Historical Complex, declared a National Monument in 2008, preserves more than 1,700 objects belonging to the Castro family. Including the room where Fidel was born, the dining room, the school he attended as an auditor. Photographs of Raúl in his childhood, and the family mausoleum with copper roses dedicated to each member.

Moreover the museum curator stated that working there for over 25 years is a source of pride. Surrounded by a team that shares the mission of bringing visitors, both foreign and younger generations. Closer to the life of the Commander and the events that began with the triumph of January 1st, 1959.

Visiting Birán is to touch history with your own hands and to remember. Amidst its timeless landscape and walls laden with memories, that revolutions are born from concrete realities and that leaders. Also before becoming myths, were children who played in a small town and chose to fight for freedom.
