At a time when the availability of fuel for electricity generation is unstable in Cuba. In the province of Holguin, it is a matter of political, governmental, and health commitment. To ensure that its 14 hospitals have energy backup to guarantee the continuity of services.
According to the General Director of Health, Dr. Julio Yamel Verdecia Reyes, the province’s 14 hospitals remain operational. As do the 42 polyclinics in the different health areas. Although they are not immune to the negative impact of the blockade and the shortages caused by the lack of fuel.
Furthermore, the official clarified that while there are currently areas that are not backed up by fuel-powered generators. They are protected and maintain their energy supply through the National Electrical System (SEN).
He also expressed that, amidst the difficulties caused by the current energy situation. So it is a privilege for the sector to have the political and governmental will to support healthcare institutions. With the highest priority using available resources, thus guaranteeing the continuity of their services and care for the people.
As a consequence of the recent partial disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN). The strategy remained focused on prioritizing the circuits that supply the four provincial hospitals. And the hospitals in the municipalities of Mayari and Moa, located in eastern Holguin province.
Currently, three provincial institutions have backup power through photovoltaic solar energy (PVES): the March 8th Maternity Home. The Modesto Fornaris Psychopedagogical Medical Center, and the Psychiatric Hospital.
As part of the strategy for using renewable energy sources, plans are underway to install this technology in eight other institutions. That provide vital services and in the Senior Citizens’ Home No. 1 in the municipality of Holguin. Therefore, services in Intensive Care Units that require the use of life support equipment, Neonatal services, emergency rooms, and trauma care remain essential.
