Holguin Celebrates Cosme Proenza’s Artistic Legacy

A mixed exhibition of works by Cosme Proenza Almaguer at the Holguin Provincial Center for Visual Arts (CPAP). It pays tribute to the artist’s work on the occasion of his birth.

The exhibition, which opened this Thursday in the CPAP’s small gallery. Features the original piece “Variations on Themes by Matisse.” Under the general direction of Yuricel Moreno and with introductory remarks by creators Ronald Guillén and Bertha Beltrán.

Beltrán recalled that the renowned painter considered his work elitist. Due to its close relationship with art history. Yet he always maintained that experiencing it was within everyone’s reach.

Guillén highlighted Cosme’s fundamental role in contemporary Cuban art. He affirmed that his works transcended the island’s borders. Raising the profile of Cuban visual arts worldwide.

He also stated that the artist created his own dialogue and way of understanding creation. Using mediums such as drawing to challenge traditional conventions and produce work from a place of authenticity. Without limits to creativity or medium.

The exhibition is part of the activities commemorating the 35th anniversary of the CPAP (Center for Popular Arts and Design). Dedicated to strengthening ties with young artists by offering them a space for their expressions. A premise that has characterized the institution since its inception.

Cosme Proenza Almaguer was born in Tacajo, Holguin, on March 5th, 1948. He passed away in the city of Holguin in September 2022. Leaving a broad legacy in painting, drawing, illustration, and teaching. Distinguished by his combination of classicism, personal mythology, and references to the tradition of European art.
