Spanish MP Satisfied with Support for Cuba in Congress

Deputy Nahuel González López expressed his elation on Monday at the support for Cuba. Achieved in the Spanish Congress of Deputies through its Foreign Affairs Committee.

Just over a week ago, a motion rejecting the intensification of the US blockade was approved in Parliament. Spearheaded by the Sumar movement, led by United Left (IU). And supported by EH Bildu, ERC, Podemos, and the Canary Coalition.

“For us, this non-binding resolution (amended by the Socialists of the PSOE, the majority party in the government) was a success. As it positions Congress alongside the Cuban people. Also who are suffering a true humanitarian crisis,” González López told Prensa Latina.

The United Left (IU) legislator pointed out that the attempt to suffocate Cuba is provoked by the US, and in particular by Donald Trump. “We believe that international solidarity is very important.” In this case, he emphasized, the Spanish Congress is taking a clear stance. Telling the White House that it lacks the legitimacy to impose these types of sanctions. Which violate human rights and all international norms. Therefore, the Spanish people stand absolutely with the Cuban people.

González López explained to Prensa Latina that the non-binding resolution on Cuba was an extraordinary step. Given that political groups, historically with quite conservative positions, voted in favor of this initiative.

It demonstrates that the US’s actions regarding Cuba transcend ideology and are a fundamental human rights issue, he added.

The text, which was rejected by the conservative People’s Party (PP), Junts per Catalunya (right-wing), and the far-right Vox party. Calls on the government to demand, in all forums, an end to Trump’s “coercive measures” against Cuba. At the same time, it demands the lifting of the blockade. “In accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly repeatedly adopted with Spain’s support.”

Moreover the vote resulted in 19 votes in favor from the Sumar coalition and the PSOE. Along with all the partners in Pedro Sánchez’s government. The right wing voted against it with 18 votes.

The non-binding resolution calls for strengthening cooperation with Cuba. Especially in energy, food, pharmaceuticals, and in all other areas where possible.
