Russian scientists create chewing gum that strengthens tooth enamel

Young scientists from Sechenov University have developed an enzyme-based chewing gum. That dissolves plaque and strengthens tooth enamel, the digital portal Nauka.mail reported.

According to the article, a team of young scientists from the E.V. Borovsky Institute of Dentistry at Sechenov University developed Caligenta Oral Care chewing gum. With a special enzymatic composition that not only freshens breath but also helps care for teeth throughout the day.

The developers believe the new product can transform oral hygiene practices. Significantly reduce the risk of cavities and other dental and gum diseases. The main problem this smart chewing gum addresses is the lack of oral hygiene after each meal.

The researcher, a fourth-year student at the Borovski Institute, added that the team of dentists and pharmaceutical technologists. He devised a way to make preventive care a pleasant habit for people to naturally adopt.

When chewed, the enzymes in the gum dissolve soft plaque and convert it into an antibacterial substance. Along with a special protein, this destroys the harmful bacteria that cause cavities, Galkin explained.

Also the calcium in the gum strengthens tooth enamel. Another benefit is its cumulative effect. If you chew this gum regularly, the enzymes remain on the surface layer of the tooth. And continue to protect against cavities even after you stop using it.

However, the developers emphasize that chewing gum does not replace regular brushing in the morning and at night. Nevertheless, it is an excellent aid in basic hygiene routines. Especially after meals when brushing isn’t an option.

The product already has support: it has become a benchmark in Skolkovo and the Moscow Innovation Cluster. The team is awaiting the delivery of raw materials. After which production will begin in Russia and the new product will be launched.
