Cuban Border Guards Respond to Attack in Villa Clara

The Ministry of the Interior reported this Wednesday that Cuban troops repelled an armed attack perpetrated by a U.S. vessel within Cuban territorial waters.

The ministry detailed that in the morning, a speedboat registered in Florida, United States (registration number FL7726SH). It was detected approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel, in Cayo Falcones, Corralillo municipality, Villa Clara province.

When a Border Guard Troops unit, comprised of five personnel, approached to identify the vessel. The occupants opened fire on the Cuban officers, the statement emphasized.

As a result of the attack, the commander of the Cuban vessel was wounded. And the national forces responded in accordance with legitimate self-defense protocols.

At the time of this report, four of the attackers were killed and six were wounded.

All the injured were evacuated and are receiving medical attention in Cuban institutions.

The Ministry of the Interior reaffirmed that the defense of territorial waters is a fundamental pillar of national security. Also reiterated the Cuban State’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty against any aggression.

The relevant authorities are continuing their investigations to fully clarify the facts.
