Faced with the complex energy situation in the country, the Electric Company in the province of Holguin. Implemented a series of operational strategies designed to manage the available load. Prioritizing supply to essential institutions and seeking to balance outages between the provincial capital and the surrounding municipalities.
In a recent press conference, Ruber Reinaldo, the company’s general manager in the province. He explained that the current approach has moved beyond the concept of blackouts to focus on energy management.
According to the manager, distribution is governed by the existence of base circuits. Which encompass strategic economic and social objectives such as tourist destinations. The nickel industry, hospitals, and water pumping systems.
One of the key aspects of the management strategy was the optimization of the electrical grid. Reinaldo reported that, months ago, technical adjustments were made to reduce the number of circuits with continuous power supply. “We had six pairs of circuits that rotated to separately protect the Pediatric, Clinical-Surgical, and Military hospitals.
Through investments and upgrades, we converted those six circuits into a single, priority circuit,” he explained. This maneuver freed up five circuits that became available for shutdown. Helping to alleviate the burden on other sectors that suffered longer outages.
The manager noted that the main objective was to prevent outlying municipalities from experiencing more than 12 or 15 consecutive hours of power outages. To achieve this, the Electric Company implemented scheduled power cuts in the city of Holguin at strategic times (9:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m.). To break the streak of blackouts in the hardest-hit areas outside the provincial capital.
The technical strategy also focused on guaranteeing vital services even under conditions of extreme shortages. In the municipality of Banes, engineers from the Electric Union worked. On an adaptation plan to consolidate essential infrastructure into a single circuit. Including the water pumping system and Etecsa’s service centers, vital for maintaining communications.
Similar actions were carried out at the Güirabo substation and in the municipality of Mayari. Where technical work was performed to isolate residential customers from the lines that feed the water pumping system. Ensuring that the water supply would not be interrupted even if the rest of the circuit was affected.
Investments were also highlighted in Gibara and in the area of the water treatment plant. Also where 24-hour lines were built and transformers were upgraded to guarantee that water reaches the population regardless of the state of the electrical system. “Water became a top priority for us,” stated Reinaldo.
The management of the Electric Company made a special appeal to the public’s conscience. Particularly to customers (both residential and government-owned) who live in circuits protected by their proximity to hospitals or service centers. Starting this month, more rigorous monitoring of consumption in these circuits began. The established goal was to achieve savings of at least 20 percent compared to previous months.
Also the executive emphasized that, for those who enjoy the “privilege” of not being affected. Saving energy is an ethical obligation and a matter of solidarity with the rest of the population who face severe power outages of 3×9 hours or even longer.
Finally, it was reported that the company continues working on new technical adjustments. To address even more deteriorated scenarios, always seeking to minimize the social impact. To ensure that, despite the emergency, health services and the water supply remain operational.
