Holguin: Innovations Contribute to Rail Transport

The implementation of innovations such as rail sidings and turnouts. Used by railcars was a priority for the transportation sector in Holguin during 2025. In a context marked by fuel and lubricant shortages.

Faced with limitations on the transport of cargo and passengers by rail. Resulting from the financial crisis and the coercive measures imposed by the United States. Seven sidings were upgraded to improve energy efficiency. Reduce the costs of transporting goods, Lázaro Llanes Lemes, director of the Cuban Railway Union in the province, told CNA.

In collaboration with the 60th Anniversary of the October Revolution Company (KTP). The sector is working on the restoration of these railcars. Each with an individual capacity of up to 60 tons. Each train can pull 10 railcars. In which are used to transport subsidized basic food items and other consumer goods.

As part of the innovation programs, the restoration of railcars continued. With work underway on a third vehicle from Las Tunas. This vehicle has already completed the bodywork refurbishment phase. So is currently undergoing engine repairs, he explained.

Llanes Lemes added that, throughout the year, the construction of auxiliary infrastructure, such as rail turnouts, continued. These structures are vital for the operation of the railcars. Responsible for providing transportation to isolated areas of the country.

Due to the country’s difficult energy situation, exacerbated by the US oil embargo. Transportation services in the province have been reduced and adjusted. Only the Holguin-Havana national train continues to operate by rail, running every eight days.
