Holguin Celebrates Centenary of Iconic Martí Cinema

Holguin celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Martí Cinema. Located in the iconic building on Frexes Street, across from Calixto García Park in the northeastern capital city.

To mark the centennial of the cultural institution, a wide range of activities was held. Including an exhibition of iconic posters from Cuban film history. As well as screenings of animated films and movies.

Additionally, the panel discussion “100 Years of Cinema,” led by critic José Rojas Bez and filmmaker Alfonso Bandera, took place. Also where they discussed the various uses of the building since its founding and its role in Holguin’s culture. As well as in the promotion of Cuban and international audiovisual productions.

According to César Hidalgo Torres, a professor and radio producer in Holguin specializing in historical programs. The event also served as a tribute to the Avilés family of Holguin, who bequeathed to the city a century-old popular music orchestra they founded. A medical clinic, the city’s public clocks, and the beautiful movie theater building.

Inaugurated on February 10th, 1926, by Don Manuel Avilés Lozano, in an era of silent films. The Avilés Orchestra provided music that complemented the themes and atmosphere of each movie. Marking the beginning of a must-see venue in the city’s life at the time, a place that has stood the test of time.

With ten decades of history, the Martí Cinema has been the epicenter of diverse events. Serving as a sub-venue for the Gibara International Low-Budget Film Festival, the Por Primera Vez National Audiovisual Festival, and the Cámara Azul space. Within the Romerías de Mayo festival, to name just a few examples. Fulfilling its role as a cultural landmark of the city.
