Holguin Clinic Improves Orthodontic Treatment Despite Impacts from the U.S. Blockade

An innovation is improving orthodontic services in the province of Holguin. One of the branches of dentistry most affected by the intensification of the U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba.

Diana Rosa Fernández González, a specialist at the Manuel Angulo Clinic in the provincial capital and creator of the initiative. Told CNA that the device corrects crossbite. A common disorder in children who receive this service.
The specialist explained that this anomaly occurs when the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. Causing an inward grinding motion and hindering the normal growth of the jaws.

According to Fernández González, the innovation consists of adapting a bilateral expansion screw to operate unilaterally. Allowing for the correction of the malformation and improving the quality of life for patients.

She added that this modification corrects the cross-section of the affected side and promotes normal. Symmetrical jaw growth, restoring its function in the child’s development.

José Eduardo Díaz Morell, a second-degree specialist and senior professor in the department, emphasized that if the anomaly is not corrected in time. It requires surgical intervention to restore jaw function. Amidst the resource limitations faced by the healthcare sector.

He explained that these bilateral screws are available in stores. So their adaptation compensates for the lack of the original devices. Which cannot be imported because they are manufactured by American companies.

Ada Martínez Díaz, grandmother of a child who benefited from the treatment, stated that the innovation has considerably improved the life of her grandson, Gabriel Peña Martínez. So not only because he is gradually regaining his normal functions but also because of the psychological impact of this condition.

Dentistry faces limitations in supplies, consumables, and prosthetics, hindering treatment for school-aged children. One of the most vulnerable groups in the face of the strengthening of the genocidal policy. Which generates millions of dollars in annual losses for the Cuban economy.
