Tribute to the Heroes in Holguin: Duty Turned into Mourning

Mourning fills the air of Holguin today as its people gather to honor the lives cut short by those who fell in the line of duty in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. A nation they defended with the same courage as their own homeland.

At the La Periquera Provincial Museum, an emblematic site where Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro first addressed the people of Holguin in 1959. It mourners came to pay posthumous tribute to the remains of the Cuban sons taken during the criminal actions of the United States government against the South American country.

“Surviving seems wrong when so many brave comrades perished. Worthy men whose sacrifice and gallantry deserve to be remembered forever,” said Lieutenant Colonel Gregorio Romero Osorio, a survivor of the attack.

On a fateful day like this, Lieutenant Colonel Abel Guerra Perera, a survivor of the bombing of Fort Tiuna where they were on a military training misión. Choked up as he recounted those hours of uncertainty and fire that marked the unit’s destiny.

The tears and grief of the families and loved ones of the Holguin natives, whose remains returned to the land of their birth. Resonate throughout Cuba like a cry for justice. Because no one was prepared for the separation to become eternal.

On behalf of the people of Holguin. Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province. He stated that the fallen compatriots were men formed in the ethics of historical consciousness and internationalism. Also who went to fulfill their assigned responsibility with fidelity, loyalty, and determination. That their example will live forever in the memory of Latin America.

The posthumous tribute was also attended by Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguin. Major General Eugenio Armando Ravilero, head of the Eastern Army. First Colonel Luis de la Cruz Medina, head of the Military Region. Other political and government authorities, and military leaders, among others.
