With the goal of utilizing local resources, the Holguin Construction Materials Company (Médano) is innovating with lime-based products. Aimed at reducing environmental impact and replacing imports.
Among its main product lines is Cerocem mortar, which uses raw materials readily available in the province. Such as zeolite and fine aggregates, to replace the use of Portland cement. Which is expensive and in high demand in foreign markets. Without affecting the quality of construction, explained Yudelkis Salcedo Fernández, technical and development director, to CNA.
Based on laboratory tests and industrial trials, the product demonstrated high resistance over time. A greater capacity to absorb stresses from natural structural movements. In which reduces the appearance of cracks, and, by using organic resources, antibacterial and fungicidal properties that provide adequate breathability.
The applications of this mortar include the construction of load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls using blocks, bricks, and latticework. Wall cladding for repair and plastering; and the installation of tile, hydraulic tile, and natural stone flooring.
Also the engineer explained that, to date, the company reports a production of over 600 tons of this material. Used in projects across several municipalities. With the greatest impact on the state housing program.
Designed based on traditional construction principles, Cerocem is part of Médano’s product diversification strategy and represents a more environmentally friendly alternative. Due to its manufacturing process and its ability to reduce its carbon footprint.
Other products developed by the company using lime include bricks and ornamental limestone slabs used for finishing walls, floors, and pavements. As well as medium-strength concrete, used in the manufacture of balusters and latticework.
