Six dead and five injured in traffic accident in Moa

A traffic accident occurred Monday afternoon in the municipality of Moa, Holguin province, with a preliminary death toll of six and five injured.

The accident happened at approximately 4:00 p.m. on the road to Baracoa. On the stretch leading to the Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara factory. According to initial reports, a pickup truck collided with a tricycle or “riquimbili” that was transporting passengers.

Furthermore the collision resulted in the deaths of five people at the scene and a sixth victim at the Dr. Guillermo Luis Fernández Hernández-Baquero Hospital, where they were taken.

From the moment the traffic accident occurred, the highest authorities of the municipality, the Ministry of the Interior. As well as the rescue and salvage teams from the nickel industry and the SIUM (Integrated System of Medical Emergencies) of the territory. They arrived at the scene and carried out the necessary actions to attend to the injured and to identify and transport the deceased.

At the Dr. Guillermo Luis Fernández Hernández-Baquero Hospital, the emergency response protocol for mass casualty incidents was activated. Also the injured received prompt and thorough care. Both in the Traumatology Department and in the Special Care Unit of the Emergency Room.

Among the five injured were both drivers of the vehicles involved.

Health authorities reported their identities and medical conditions:

  • Sandro Medina Oliveros, 52 years old, resident of the Miraflores neighborhood: Serious but stable.
  • Yanet Rodríguez Reyes, 49 years old, from Punta Gorda Arriba: Head injury but stable.
  • Omar Breff Blanco, 58 years old, from the Armando Mestre neighborhood (tricycle driver): Serious.
  • Liset Suárez Lovaina, 29 years old, from Quemado del Negro: Non-serious injuries, stable.
  • Eroeldis Borges Alpajón, 23 years old, from Cayo Grande de Yamanigüey: Serious, stable.

The fatalities were identified by authorities as:

  • Andys William Mendoza Ferrer, 41 years old, from the Aeropuerto neighborhood, Frank País.
  • Enoelio Borges Reyes, 50 years old, originally from Moa, from Cayo Grande de Yamanigüey.
  • Maria Carla Noguera Despaigne, 19 years old, from Avenida Lenin, 26 de Julio neighborhood.
  • Emmanuel Rodríguez Igarza, 23 years old, from Punta Gorda Arriba.
  • Eloina Reyes González, 69 years old, from Punta Gorda Arriba. • Liolvis Lofforte Alpajón, 33 years old, from Cayo Grande de Yamanigüey.

The causes of the accident are being investigated by the competent authorities.
