Holguin’s Culture Week Begins Today

The celebrations for the 43rd Holguin Culture Week begin today in this eastern city. To commemorate the 274th anniversary of its designation as a City and Government District.

The activities, which will continue until the evening of January 18th, are dedicated to historian Mayra San Miguel, writer José Rafael Rojas Bez, and promoter Ricardo Ronda Chacón. They also pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of the City Awards and the 50th anniversary of the Cuban News Agency’s local bureau.

Yakelin Tapia, provincial director of Culture, explained to the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that this is an important first half of the year. During which Holguin becomes a major cultural hub with its anniversary celebrations. Also the Jazz Plaza Festival, the Book Fair, the May Pilgrimages, and the “For the First Time” and “Cine Pobre” film festivals in Gibara.

She assured that each artistic expression will have its own space, and stages will be created in Calixto García Park and other locations to replace the Eddy Suñol Theater. In which is undergoing repairs after Hurricane Melissa.

The opening day, as is customary, will feature a parade from the Lieutenant Governor’s House Museum to the Manuel Dositeo Aguilera House of Culture. Also where the opening gala will begin with a diverse selection of artists.

Among the main activities will be the workshops “The Historian and History,” led by Mayra San Miguel. The 13th edition of the Research Event on the Territory’s Cultural Heritage. And the inauguration of the City Hall for its 39th edition.

Moreover the program also includes concerts, galas featuring amateur artists. With theoretical discussions between professionals. And students from the University of Holguin. As well as the awards ceremony for the “Holguin, My Beloved Holguin” literary contest. Moreover the presentation of the City Awards during the closing gala.

Holguin Culture Week was first celebrated in 1983 in honor of January 18th, 1772. The date on which Holguin was granted the title of City and Government District. Since then, this event has highlighted the historical and traditional roots that define the identity of this eastern city.
