ICAP Celebrates 65 Years of Solidarity Actions in Holguin

The Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) celebrates its 65th anniversary. With positive results and unwavering international support in the fight to end the U.S. blockade of the island. Also secure the removal of the naval base that remains illegally in Guantanamo territory.

This institution was founded by Fidel Castro during a time of great tensión. Due to the escalating aggression and the empire’s attempt to isolate the Caribbean nation from the rest of the world. Its futile attempt to deprive it of the freedom achieved on January 1st, 1959.

Since its creation on December 30th, 1959, the ICAP has fostered a broad and effective international solidarity movement. To this end, territorial delegations were established in the then-provinces of Camagüey, Santa Clara, Matanzas, Pinar del Rio, and Oriente.

Shortly thereafter, due to its size, Oriente was divided into North Oriente (Las Tunas and Holguin) and South Oriente (Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo, and Granma), later expanding its reach to the entire country.

During these 65 years, the ICAP has led solidarity actions with Vietnam, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Palestine, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Syria, and Venezuela.

Moreover the solidarity movement with Cuba has supported this heroic people through practical actions in different parts of the world. Material donations, and direct contact with various sectors of Cuban society. The former USSR, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Germany were represented by engineers and specialists in the execution of important industrial and social projects.

Subsequently, visits from solidarity supporters from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Austria, Argentina, and other countries increased. With notable participation in the struggle for the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorist heroes imprisoned in the United States. Particularly in international conferences.

The presence of foreign friends at the Romerías de Mayo (May Pilgrimages) and the Ibero-American Culture Festivals has also been significant. For these reasons, ICAP is recognized for its contributions to international solidarity. Through the active participation of the country’s political and mass organizations, agencies, and institutions. Especially in the context of the centennial of Fidel Castro’s birth and the 67th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
