The shift in the energy matrix for the water resources sector is benefiting more than 57,000 residents of Holguin. As part of Cuba’s renewable energy programs.
This project includes the installation of solar-powered pumps in isolated, vulnerable, and hard-to-reach communities. Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, provincial delegate for this sector, told CNA.
He indicated that the project is being implemented in 11 of the 14 municipalities in the eastern province. Improves access to the service regardless of electricity generation. Thus helping to reduce outages and connect new customers to the systems.
The official noted that the project is benefiting communities traditionally affected by drought. Where the feasibility of drilling new wells is also being studied.
In this first phase, the plan is to reach 120 systems with the energy matrix shift. Of which 117 are already operational, with three remaining pending equipment completion, Echavarría pointed out.
During 2025, the sector prioritized maintaining the water supply systems to the provincial capital. Repairing pipelines, and restoring more than 200 pumping stations damaged by Hurricane Melissa.
Cuba has a strategy in place until 2030 to expand the use of renewable energy sources in all sectors of society. With the goal of reducing fossil fuel consumption and increasing the use of clean energy.
Among Holguin’s achievements are the installation of more than 500 solar panels donated by Canada in the municipality of Moa. Also some solar water heaters at the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital. As well as the use of these energy sources for food production.
