The Cuban Electric Union announced the installation of the first battery container. For the Energy Storage System (BESS in the Spanish acronym) in the Holguin municipality of Cueto. A project being carried out in conjunction with the Military Construction Union.
This investment, as reported by CNA, is part of the Government Plan for the recovery of the National Electric System (SEN). The project represents the concrete realization of one of the most anticipated projects. Also for the people to address the energy crisis affecting the country.
BESS systems allow for the storage of surplus energy generated during periods of low demand. Releasing it during periods of high consumption or when there are generation interruptions. Smoothing out fluctuations and improving the reliability of the entire grid.
Moreover this progress in Cueto is part of a broader plan that includes the installation of several similar systems at key locations throughout the country. Investment in energy storage technology is seen as a fundamental component for increasing system resilience.
Also more efficiently integrating intermittent renewable energy sources, and moving toward greater energy sovereignty. By reducing vulnerability to failures at thermoelectric power plants.
Holguin achieved significant milestones in 2025. Distinguishing itself through progress in the energy matrix transformation. With the installation of four photovoltaic solar parks totaling 21.8 megawatts and several smaller ones.
