Holguin players fail to qualify for National Chess Championships

No player from Holguin was able to secure one of the two spots awarded at the Eastern Zone Chess Championships. Held at Pepito Tey University in Las Tunas province for both men and women.

Daineris Guerrero came closest, scoring 6.0 points in a hard-fought battle for the second spot with Karen Torres from Granma. She finished third after the tiebreaker system was applied and was eliminated from the national finals. Also it will be held next year in Pinar del Rio.

Dominated by FIDE Master (FM) Liannet Bosh from Santiago. Who finished undefeated with 7.5 points out of a possible nine. The other Holguin players in the competition lagged behind in eighth and ninth place, respectively. Evelitce Salazar (3.5) and Lianet Aguilera (3.0).

Among the men, Holguin’s best performance came from 16-year-old David Alejandro Calzadilla, who finished third with 7.0 points. He suffered a costly defeat in the final round against Jeorling Batista from Granma. Moreover who ultimately finished second with 8.0 points, half a point behind the leader, Alfredo Aguilera.

The other two Holguin representatives in the competition finished in fifth place: Héctor Luis Fuentes (6.0 points) and FIDE Master Manuel Darío Ochoa (5.5 points), respectively.

These Eastern Zone Chess Tournaments, held in the province of Las Tunas, awarded two spots for each gender to the National Championships.
