David Alejandro Calzadilla maintains 2nd place in Chess Tournament

David Alejandro Calzadilla, from Holguin, maintained his undefeated record and second place in the Eastern Zone Chess Tournament. Drawing his games in rounds seven and eight. Played this Tuesday at the University of Las Tunas.

Calzadilla, 16, an athlete from the Pedro Díaz Coello Sports Initiation School (EIDE). Drew with fellow Holguin native Héctor Luis Fuentes and with FIDE Master (FM) Brayan Torres from Santiago de Cuba. Reaching 6.0 points, one point behind the leader, local FM Alfredo Aguilera.

Roberto Alcántara, also from Holguin and the event’s chief arbiter, reported that in addition to David Alejandro’s performance (four wins and four draws). His live rating has surpassed the Elo rating required to qualify him as a National Master. This title is achieved by surpassing 2,250 points. If they reach 2,300, they would obtain the title of FIDE Master.

The other players from Holguin in the Zonal tournament are Héctor Luis, fourth with 5.0 points, and FM Manuel Darío Ochoa (3.0 – seventh).

In the women’s competition, Dairenis Guerrero suffered a costly defeat against Karen Torres from Granma. Leaving her with 3.5 points and dropping to fifth place, which jeopardizes her qualification for the national final.

Also competing in Las Tunas are Lianet Aguilera (2.0) and Evelitce Salazar (2.0), who are in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Both eastern regional tournaments award two spots for the Absolute (Camagüey) and Women’s (Pinar del Rio) National Championships in 2026.
