With the goal of diversifying energy sources and reducing electricity consumption at its various activity levels. The Numa Food Production and Distribution Company in Holguin is promoting the installation of solar panels and water heaters at its production facilities.
As part of a strategy aimed at changing the energy matrix in all the processes carried out by the entity. Which include ice cream production, baking, small-scale manufacturing, and other areas. Also the installation of this equipment has begun in a pilot project for later expansión. Explained Kirenia Balada Peña, director of Numa, to CNA.
The first project began at the Piedra Blanca micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME). Where the installation of solar water heaters has allowed the company to replace the use of more than 320 kilograms of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per month. Previously used in ice cream production, thus contributing to the center’s energy efficiency.
Moreover the strategy is to work in stages, which allows for proper planning of expenses. As is the case with the Avi-Helados y Conservas (Ice Cream and Preserves) local development project in Rafael Freyre. After implementing solar water heaters, the project already has the technical and scientific study for the next pase. Which will involve photovoltaic cells, she emphasized.
To advance this mission, the organization received 27 solar panels from a donation from the Strengthening Municipal Capacities for Local Development project. These panels are destined for a large-scale mini-industry in Calixto García. Meanwhile which handles various product processing and preservation methods.
Currently, they expect that, once the necessary transformer banks for grid connection are installed. This equipment will allow a significant portion of the industry to become operational in the short term, she noted.
Initially, the goal is the gradual installation of more than 30 of these solar panels in various locations. Including the Gran Ceiba production complex in Rafael Freyre. This will support the baking, pastry, and other related activities at several centers.
Balada Peña added that other projects include the installation of solar panels at a bakery in the municipality of Baguano, which will contribute 1.1 kilowatt-hours daily. To the manufacturing processes and help reduce local electricity consumption.
The Numa Company maintains the vitality of its industrialization lines through the use of science and technological innovation. With strategic alliances with local institutions such as the Héroes del 26 de Julio Agricultural Equipment and Implements Company and the University of Holguin.
