A climate study developed by the Holguin Provincial Meteorological Center is now being implemented in the province as part of climate change mitigation programs in eastern Cuba.
Zulema Reyes, a specialist at the center, explained to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) that the program includes the analysis of temperature and precipitation variations. Which can be incorporated into hazard, vulnerability, and risk assessments.
She noted that this is of utmost importance for sectors such as tourism and agricultura. As it allows for prospective development planning in harmony with the environment. Taking into account the resilience of local populations.
Also she highlighted that the study considers high-intensity weather events and saltwater intrusión. Both associated with climate change and whose frequency is increasing over time.
The expert indicated that the results are also being considered for the management of protected areas, ecosystem conservation, and other variables prioritized by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment. She added that among the fluctuations that have occurred in recent years. The five percent increase in the average annual temperature and the increase in periods of drought stand out.
The Holguin Provincial Meteorological Center has a multidisciplinary team dedicated to research. Prioritizing topics such as the intense drought, air pollution, food sovereignty, and other issues related to climate patterns.
