The 64th National Baseball Series continues today after a day of rest. Allowing teams to catch their breath before heading into the final stretch in search of postseason berths.
Each team has just seven regular season games remaining before the National Commission decides how to play the 24 suspended games. A real headache given the proximity of the playoff dates and the Caribbean Series.
The reigning champions, the Las Tunas Lumberjacks, and the Matanzas Crocodiles remain at the top of the standings. They are already developing strategies for the quarterfinal matchups. Although they must maintain their competitive edge, as several objectives remain at stake.
Despite their winning streak, neither team has secured one of the top two spots that grant direct entry to the Elite League. Furthermore, achieving a good ranking would allow them to fase. In theory, more manageable opponents in the next phase.
Also the Tuneros will seek their sixth consecutive victory today—and their fifth against the surprising Cienfuegos Elephants—who, despite their strong season, have been unable to defeat the Easterners at their home stadium, Estadio 5 de Septiembre. Relegating them to seventh place in the standings.
Meanwhile, the Matanzas will try to secure the season series in Bayamo against the Granma Alazanes. A team that still has a chance at a playoff spot, sitting two and a half games out of the coveted playoff zone. The Holguin Cubs, Mayabeque Hurricanes, and Havana Industriales complete the leading group that should be securing their playoff berths in the coming days.
The Holguin team has encountered fierce resistance at Estadio Cristóbal Labra against the already eliminated Isla de la Juventud Pirates. Who defend their home turf with the same dignity regardless of their position in the overall standings. The northeastern team, currently in third place, has lost twice there and will try to even the head-to-head record today.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes, who have defeated the Santiago Wasps three times—one of those victories being forfeited for using an ineligible player—will look to definitively tip the scales and continue their climb up the standings. Industriales aims for their fourth consecutive win against the Tigers in Ciego de Avila, with the added objective of evening the all-time record against the only team that has a better head-to-head record in the National Series.
At Nguyen Van Troi Stadium, the Sancti Spiritus Roosters will try to take advantage of the last-place Guantanamo Indians to secure their fourth consecutive victory and solidify their position in the playoff zone. The Artemisa Hunters, with seven losses in their last 10 games, are under pressure to finish in eighth place and are forced to bounce back after losing two of their first three games against the Villa Clara Leopards, who haven’t given up hope.
Finally, the Pinar del Rio Vegueros, playing at their home stadium, Capitán San Luis. Need to string together wins to climb into the top spots after suffering two defeats against the Camagüey Bulls, a team with nothing left to lose.
