The Medano Construction Materials Company in Holguin is promoting the diversification of its production by utilizing local mineral resources. Aiming to respond to market dynamics and improve operational efficiency.
To address the cement shortage, an essential input for the province’s productive and economic development. The company is implementing a comprehensive strategy to diversify its production lines through alternatives that reduce its dependence on cement and ensure the supply of raw materials. Explained Yudelkis Salcedo Fernández, Technical and Development Director, to the Cuban News Agency (CNA).
Among the main initiatives are the implementation of the zero-cement mortar Cerocem. The development of red ceramic elements, and the conversion of the pipe factory to produce cold asphalt concrete—efforts aimed at meeting the demand of local construction projects.
The portfolio of new products includes blocks and tiles made with cement, slag, and waste from other production processes. Also the manual and industrial production of paving stones and bricks from limestone; and ornamental slabs that utilize raw materials available in the deposits of the northeastern region.
Salcedo emphasized that, through technological innovation, they plan to create a locally manufactured lime mil. Which will guarantee the continuity of the industry and optimize the use of local resources.
The use of mining slag and tailings will also contribute to reducing industrial waste and the environmental footprint. In line with sustainability goals and the promotion of a circular economy.
Moreover to achieve these objectives, the company is establishing strategic alliances with the Antonio Núñez Jiménez University of Moa and with institutions. Such as the National Company for Applied Research and the Nickel Research Center, which are involved in geological studies, she added.
The Medano of Holguin company, recognized four times as a National Vanguard, reaffirms its commitment to science, innovation, and research. As pillars for boosting civil engineering construction programs and reducing the need for external supplies.
