On the 206th anniversary of the birth of the illustrious Mambí patriot Lucía Íñiguez Landín, the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) in Holguin recognized its members in the province for their decades of dedication and contributions to society.
The ceremony, held in front of the monument to the Holguin heroine, served as the setting for inscribing new names in the symbolic Book of Honor, “The Lucías of Today.” Which testifies to women’s commitment to the Revolution and its welfare projects. A gesture that perpetuates Lucía’s legacy as a symbol of fortitude, filial love, and unwavering devotion to the homeland.

During the ceremony, presided over by Joel Queipo Ruíz, First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in Holguin, and Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, Governor of the province. The FMC 65th Anniversary Commemorative Seal was awarded to women from various sectors. Such as Health, Education, Law, Agriculture, and Culture. Among them were four municipal general secretaries who distinguished themselves during the recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, despite having their own homes damaged.

Among those honored was Miriam Santana Hernández, with more than 45 years in the organization. Also where she served as secretary for the municipality of Moa and later as general secretary for 15 years. Leaving a profound mark on the work of the women’s organization in the province.

Elizabeth Martínez Quintero, general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) in Holguin, stated that “in the face of the intensified blockade and current challenges. The women of Holguin continue to weave the banner of our time with threads of strength and intelligence.” Working tirelessly in education, health, food production, and the defense of the values of the Revolution.
She also emphasized that the example of Lucía Íñiguez, the mother who sewed flags for the Mambises (Cuban independence fighters) and nourished the struggle for independence with her indomitable spirit. Remains a beacon guiding contemporary Cuban women in their daily work. Whether as scientists, teachers, doctors, producers, or community leaders.
The event thus reaffirmed that the legacy of Lucía Íñiguez Landín. Understood as love for the homeland, sacrifice, and resilience in the face of adversity, endures and multiplies in the daily and heroic work of Cuban women.
