The Holguin Provincial Oncology Center, located at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital, is promoting a program focused on the early detection and treatment of new cancer cases. One of the leading causes of death in the eastern province.
Pedro Alejandro Escalona Díaz, director of the institution, told CNA that the service has highly trained professionals from national and international centers. Enabling them to perform highly complex surgeries of the head and neck, digestive tract, and orthopedic oncology.
He specified that the surgical area performs 30 to 40 operations per week. Including elective and major procedures, and the radiotherapy department treats approximately 120 patients daily. Within the territorial coverage area that also includes the provinces of Granma and Las Tunas.
Moreover he noted that these indicators demonstrate the increase in annual cases. Which has prompted actions aimed at early detection, such as health promotion. Focused on reducing harmful habits, adopting healthy lifestyles, and providing clinical examinations to vulnerable populations.
Also he added that the necessary medical equipment remains operational. Despite being under heavy use due to the high number of patients served. Which exceeds two thousand new cases on average each year.
Currently, as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Lenin Hospital, the painting, furniture, maintenance of the wards, and the plumbing systems in the inpatient wards are being revitalized. These wards have a high occupancy rate. So their repair directly impacts patient satisfaction.
Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled multiplication of the body’s cells and their potential spread to other organs. It is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Holguin, the most frequent cancers are skin cancer, with approximately 800 new cases each year. Followed by breast and lung cancer, which are among the leading causes of death in the province.
