The Industriales Lions, led by right-hander Raymond Figueredo, took over Calixto García Stadium this Wednesday. Defeating the Holguin Cubs by a 10-0 knockout in seven innings to even the series in the thirteenth round of the LXIV National Baseball Series.
While his teammates collected 13 hits, including a double and three home runs, Figueredo (5-3) pitched six innings, allowing three hits, including a double. With three strikeouts, two walks, and two hit batters.
Misael Fonseca closed out the seventh, giving up two singles and striking out one batter. The loss went to left-hander Uberleydis Estévez (3-3) after a disastrous three-inning start in which he allowed eight hits and four earned runs, although he struck out two batters.
José Antonio Sánchez’s relief appearance was equally ineffective. As he pitched another three innings, giving up five hits, including three home runs. Along with two walks (one intentional) and hitting one batter, resulting in six earned runs. Left-hander Dairián Batista pitched the seventh inning, issuing one walk.
For the winners, Ariel Sánchez, Pedro Roque, and Yosvani Peñalver homered, with Peñalver going 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
Following these results, the standings in the top division are as follows: Las Tunas (37-20); Matanzas (39-23, 0.5 points behind). Industriales (36-23, 2.0 points behind); Holguin (37-24, 2.0 points behind); Mayabeque (34-25, 4.0 points behind). Cienfuegos (33-25, 4.5 points behind); Artemisa (32-27, 6.0 points behind); and Sancti Spiritus (33-29, 6.5 points behind).
For the third game this Thursday, starting at 1:30 pm, the Cubs could rely on the newly acquired Yusmel Velázquez. While Andy Vargas (1-3 and 6.98 ERA) is slated to start for the Lions.
