The simple heartbeat of a woman’s life should always be free from fear. However, thousands around the world wage a silent and constant battle against the shadow of violence. It is for them, and for the future we deserve, that a Day of struggle and awareness is being held these days. A social mobilization that transcends its immediate context to become a sustained call to action.
This Day, which culminated on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is inspired by the enduring legacy of Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal, “Las Mariposas” (The Butterflies). Whose flight was brutally cut short by the Trujillo dictatorship. Their story is not only a reminder of the past, but a beacon illuminating the path of the present. Their sacrifice, honored by the UN, is the seed of this global campaign that also resonates in our country.
Also this legacy of resistance resonates powerfully in Cuba. Also where the commemoration transcends the mere historical event to become a space for collective reflection and the strengthening of public policies that protect women.
The Cuban Revolution, with its historic commitment to social justice, has provided vital tools for this struggle. The tireless work of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC). The existence of Family Courts, and the implementation of the National Program for the Advancement of Women are pillars upon which a comprehensive strategy of prevention and support is built.
Moreover the National Organization of Collective Law Firms (ONBC) inaugurated a specialized office for comprehensive and multidisciplinary legal assistance to victims of gender-based violence. As part of a collaborative project that aims to expand to 40 municipalities across the country.
At the same time, during these weeks, spaces for dialogue are multiplying in communities, workplaces, and schools. Women’s and Family Guidance Centers are opening their doors to offer counseling. While educational campaigns are being promoted to dispel myths and foster relationships based on respect and equality.
Futhermore these actions are complemented by citizen awareness initiatives such as the “No More” campaign. Focused on preventing and responding to gender-based violence, and the observance of the 25th of each month as Orange Day. Promoted by the UN to raise awareness and eradicate this scourge.
In the legal sphere, the judicial system has taken steps by creating a Gender Committee and a specific Strategy to incorporate a gender perspective into the administration of justice.
Honoring the example of the Mirabal sisters means, in our social fabric, continuing to improve these protection mechanisms. It means listening to, believing, and supporting every woman who raises her voice. Their example is a beacon that guides the path toward equality and respect.
The fight to eradicate gender-based violence is a daily task. A principle built on dialogue, justice, and the firm conviction that no woman should be left behind. Because the true tribute to the Mariposas (Butterflies) lies not only in memory, but in constant action that ensures no woman is ever silenced again. It is a commitment that unites us—as a family, as a community, as a nation.
