The director of the “José Martí” Ophthalmological Hospital in Uruguay, Alejandro Fishel, praised what he described as the existing collaboration between the medical personnel of his country and the members of the Cuban medical brigade serving there.
This occurred during the scientific conference of the Cuban contingent. Which featured 14 presentations, three of them joint with Uruguayan healthcare personnel.
“Results and Contributions of the Cuban Medical Brigade (BMC) to Preventable Blindness in Uruguay” was one of the presentations. The Cuban medical collaboration in Uruguay has been ongoing for 18 years.
Since then, the results are impressive, with more than 119,000 ophthalmological surgeries. Over 900,000 consultations, and more than 200,000 patients screened. Also noteworthy are the conditions treated in the oculoplastics service. A specialty that covers vision problems and cosmetic surgery. This national referral hospital has only one surgeon specializing in this field, and she is Cuban.
Visual health and technology, prevention of healthcare-associated infections, age-related macular degeneration, and intraocular lens calculation were some of the topics presented and shared by Cuban and Uruguayan specialists.
“I will be grateful to Cuban doctors until the end of my days,” said Graciela Belomo, an elderly woman whose sight was restored by the doctors from the Caribbean island.
“There are more than 600 Uruguayan doctors who graduated from the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba,” said Dr. Adán González. Highlighting another aspect of the Caribbean island’s healthcare cooperation with the world.
It is this cooperation, of undeniable humanitarian character, that the United States government seeks to attack and denigrate. This was denounced by the Cuban ambassador, Antonio Pardo, his country’s chargé d’affaires.
Pardo stated that the Cuban ophthalmological brigade here is not exempt from the actions and pressures exerted by Washington in various countries where Cuba provides medical services.
Executives from the Social Security Bank, the National Organization of Associations of Retirees and Pensioners. The bank workers’ union, and other institutions participated in the scientific exhibition. The Cubans will soon fly back to their country for a well-deserved vacation. For some, it is a trip to a mission accomplished.
Others will relieve them to continue Mission Miracle, promoting this partnership, which was founded and championed by Fidel Castro. To whom this day of science and Cuban-Uruguayan fraternity was dedicated.
“We will return with renewed strength and new eyes to heal,” promised the head of the brigade, Dr. Evelyn Almira.
