The Holguin Cubs began their series against the Santiago de Cuba Wasps on Wednesday with a 19-6 victory at Major General Calixto García Stadium. Maintaining their lead in the 64th National Baseball Series.
The eight runs scored against starting pitcher and loser Osvaldo Acuña (4-3) in 1 2/3 innings would have been enough to secure the win.
Santiago’s first reliever, José Carlos Barbosa (3 ER in 6 2/3 innings), managed to stem the Cubs’ offensive onslaught by recording five consecutive runs. But in the ninth inning he showed signs of fatigue, and the next three relievers were punished mercilessly, allowing Holguin to score 10 runs.
Holguin’s starting pitcher, Uberleydis Estévez (3-2), despite allowing six hits and five earned runs. Earned the win after completing five innings of work, walking five and striking out one.
José Antonio Sánchez was ineffective, allowing one earned run in one inning. Giving up three hits, one walk, and striking out one batter. Michel Cabrera earned his eighth save, tying him for the league lead with Alberto Pablo Civil of Las Tunas. After pitching three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.
In Holguin’s prolific 21-hit offense, Michael Gorgüet stood out, going 2-for-3 with his ninth home run and three RBIs. Adriel Hechavarría went 3-for-5 with his first home run and two RBIs, and Edward Magaña went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. In the game, Nelson Batista went 3-for-6 with an RBI, and Ernesto Torres, Lázaro Cedeño (with a double and his 57th RBI, leading the league). Christian Onofre (with a double and two RBIs) each contributed two hits.
For the losing side, who collected 12 hits and committed two errors, José Luis Gutiérrez went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Francisco Martínez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Carlos Monier went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
At Victoria de Girón Stadium in Matanzas, the visiting Industriales defeated the Cocodrilos for the second consecutive day. This time 1-0, to remain half a game out of first place.
The defending champion Leñadores de Las Tunas maintained third place by defeating the Toros de Camagüey for the second straight day at Cándido González Stadium. This time by a score of 8-5. At Cristóbal Labra Stadium, the Cienfuegos Elephants secured their fifth consecutive victory. Routing the home team, the Isla de la Juventud Pirates, 14-2, to solidify their fifth-place position in the overall standings.
The Mayabeque Hurricanes maintained their playoff position with a 13-8 win over the Pinar del Rio Vegueros at their home stadium, Capitán San Luis, thanks to home runs from newcomer Xián Vega and Jonatan Martínez.
Meanwhile, the Guantanamo Indians edged out the Villa Clara Leopards 4-3. Finally, the Granma Alazanes defeated the Ciego de Avila Tigers twice. Both times by a score of 2-1, in games played at Campechuela Stadium.
The game between the Artemisa Hunters and the Sancti Spiritus Roosters was suspended due to rain with the score tied at seven runs. The standings for the playoff zone are as follows: 1- Holguin (32-18); 2- Industriales (31-18, 0.5 points behind); 3- Las Tunas (29-18, 1.5 points behind). 4- Matanzas (31-21, 2.0 points behind); 5- Cienfuegos (28-20, 3.0 points behind); 6- Artemisa (27-21, 4.0 points behind); 7- S. Spiritus (28-23, 4.5 points behind); and 8- Mayabeque (27-22, 4.5 points behind).
