Nearly 1,900 tourists were evacuated from Holguin hotels and transferred to safe locations and destinations for their protection. After the National Civil Defense General Staff declared a Cyclone Alert phase this Monday in response to the threat of Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.
Yuset Vargas Ricardo, the province’s Tourism Delegate, informed the Provincial Defense Council (CDP) that airports and interprovincial transportation have been opened. To ensure the orderly return of guests and air crews currently in the territory.
She affirmed that conditions exist to address the meteorological phenomenon. From the protection of hotel and service infrastructure to the safeguarding of property and the preservation of human lives.
Also she indicated that only the Brisas Guardalavaca Hotel remains open in the entire province with 31 guests—two Czechs and eight Canadians—and one room prepared as a staging area and shelter. Also having met all safety standards for guests who decided to remain in the country.
Moreover she explained that specialized teams have sufficient supplies to maintain operations and are carrying out protection actions for all resources. With the support of vans and buses, based on previous experiences when the Guardalavaca area was isolated.
Joel Queipo Ruíz, president of the CDP, emphasized the importance of raising awareness and preparing the population for the passage of the dangerous hurricane. So that no guidance or measure is ignored.
Hurricane Melissa has maintained its same intensity over the past few hours and has begun to move slowly north-northeastward. It remains a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. According to Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 17 issued by the Meteorological Institute’s Forecast Center.
