The Holguin Military Region has specialized brigades ready for the rescue and evacuation of the population in the event of potential emergencies. As part of the measures adopted in response to the threat of Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.
First Colonel Luis de la Cruz Medina, head of the Military Region, explained that these units are prepared with the necessary forces. Also with the resources to respond immediately to any situation arising from the impact of the meteorological phenomenon.
Futhermore he indicated that they have heavy vehicles for rescue and transportation operations. As well as four-wheel drive vehicles ready to evacuate the population in areas that could be affected by the hurricane.
Moreover he specified that the brigades work autonomously. They are made up of engineers, technicians, and rescuers equipped with ropes, life jackets, picks, shovels, and other essential tolos. Along with basic resources such as clothing, food, drinking water, and tents.
De la Cruz Medina emphasized that the forces are ready to mobilize in any direction. Without requiring external support, including to municipalities in the territory or neighboring provinces if so directed by the Commander of the Eastern Army.
Meanwhile he added that a brigade remains assigned to the Holguin Provincial Defense Council. Equipped with the necessary resources and personnel to fulfill its primary mission of protecting human life whenever and wherever necessary.
Hurricane Melissa intensified in recent hours to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. With maximum sustained winds of 230 kilometers per hour and higher gusts, reported the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) in its Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 13.
