Provincial Defense Council Offers Details of Its Route

The Holguin Provincial Defense Council met for the second time, led by its president, Joel Queipo Ruíz, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and First Secretary in the province, along with Governor Manuel Hernández Aguilera.

Queipo reiterated the need to maintain communication with the population. As this is an atypical phenomenon, and offered details of a tour conducted during the day by health institutions in the city of Holguin.

Meteorologist Lucía García updated the Council on the latest information related to the progress of Hurricane Melissa. Also as our territory has moved into the hurricane alert phase.

The specialist confirmed the forecasts that it should increase in intensity in the coming hours. That landfall is likely in the early hours of Wednesday. Everything depends on the trough that should push it further east. Bands of heavy rain are expected in the eastern region around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Category 3 storms are expected to reach the eastern region on Sunday. With strong northeasterly winds and offshore surges. The greatest impact will be in the eastern municipalities of the province.

During this stage of the Cyclone Alert, transportation is paralyzed. The national train departs on Sunday and remains in Havana. On Monday, measures will be taken with the National Buses. Due to fuel shortages, the Holguin Gazelles will operate five in the morning and the same number in the afternoon.

Moreover in the case of the Population Protection Commission, details of the next phase were activated and finalized. In which the People’s Power delegate plays an important role in the community. In Moa, protection brigades were activated for the homes of evacuees.

Regarding the electricity service, it is operating in a crisis situation, working with prepared contingents with lodging to accommodate their arrival in the province. While the photovoltaic groups throughout the province are protected with established measures.
