Cubs prepare for invasion of the top of the National Series

The Holguin Cubs will take to the Nelson Fernández field in Mayabeque this Saturday. Ready to chase a win against the Hurricanes that could catapult them to the top of the 64th National Baseball Series.

To achieve that leap, the eastern hounds will also have to hope for a defeat by the Matanzas Crocodiles. Current leaders with 25 wins and 13 losses, who have stumbled twice this week at the Cristóbal Labra Stadium against the last-place Piratas de La Isla.

The Holguin Cubs, who broke a two-game losing streak on Thursday, remain motivated under the guidance of new manager Lugdis Pineda, and proud of having been chosen to host the next All-Star Game. However, that inspiration has not yet been enough to conquer the throne.

Matanzas, meanwhile, has only won four of its last 10 matches, and despite significant losses. It maintains its lead with a hard-fought effort. This Friday, it will try to avoid a third defeat against a Piratas team that tends to be tough at home.

The championship remains red-hot. Behind the leaders, tied for third place, are Industriales, Las Tunas, and Artemisa (22-13). All with real chances of closing in on the lead.

The Leones de La Habana, firm in their Latinoamericano headquarters, will try to tame the Indios de Guantanamo, who, despite their position near the bottom, have put up a fight in every outing.

For their part, the Leñadores de Tunas and the Cazadores de Artemisa don’t have it easy either: the former visit the Leopardos de Villa Clara. While the latter face the Alazanes de Granma, in duels that could change the balance of the standings.

In other matches, Pinar del Rio will try to maintain its surge against Sancti Spiritus, and Cienfuegos will look to continue climbing the standings at the expense of Camagüey. In a day that promises excitement and possible changes in the standings.

Yesterday, in the only active subseries, Avispas de Santiago de Cuba and Tigres de Ciego de Avila split honors in their doubleheader at José Ramón Cepero Stadium.

In the first game, the Santiago de Cuba Avispas won 7-2, with Harold Vázquez driving in five runs. Also while Alberto Bisset earned his fourth win of the tournament and the 123rd of his career.

Cienfuegos then rallied to win 3-1 thanks to the pitching of Osvaldo Cárdenas, who pitched six solid innings and earned a save from Yankiel Tamayo.

The partial standings show Matanzas (25-13) at the top, followed by Holguin (24-13), the trio of Las Tunas, Industriales, and Artemisa (22-13). Santiago (21-15), Sancti Spiritus (21-17), and Mayabeque (20-17) rounding out the top spots.
