In its Briefing Note No. 1 on Tropical Storm Melissa, issued, the Civil Defense Staff has established a briefing phase for the eastern part of the country starting this afternoon. The note is reproduced below:
According to information from the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology. Tropical Storm Melissa has shown little change over the waters of the Caribbean Sea in recent hours, remaining almost stationary.
Its circulation, although distant, is interacting with the trough. Causing increased humidity and instability over our territory. Over the weekend, this cyclonic organism will continue its slow movement. Approaching Jamaica and the seas south of Cuba.
Also the gradual strengthening is expected, followed by rapid intensification, posing a potential danger to the eastern provinces.
Considering the above and the future evolution of hydrometeorological conditions, it was decided to establish the information phase starting at 2:00 p.m. today for the provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguin, Las Tunas, and Camagüey.
Moreover the population is advised to stay informed through national media and official social media profiles and to strictly follow the instructions issued by local authorities and the Civil Defense.
The National Civil Defense Staff and the Institutes of Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources are maintaining surveillance of this cyclone.
